Haunts Around Town

First, I will say that I am super excited that I won Blood Ties: Season Two from Vampire Wire.

Speaking of Vampire Wire, Marta Acosta interviewed one of my favorites: Jennifer Rardin.
Jennifer Rardin just released Bite Marks - Book 6 of the Jaz Parks Series.

This weekend many of you wanted more vampire myth! And it just so happens, some of my guest bloggers have been digging into non-fiction vampire books.
Visit Magia Posthuma to read about what books he bought will traveling Europe:

I bought a couple of books while in London. One of them being Theresa Cheung's voluminous The Element Encyclopedia of Vampires: An A-Z of the Undead (Harper Element, 2009) 'dedicated to the memory of Montague Summers'.

Diary of an Amateur Vampirologist has been adding a handful of books on his wishlist that might interest you too!

...some books on Amazon that I've got my eye on.

Last night, a few more captured my attention.

It looks like Paul Barber's coming out with a new edition of one of the best ever books on vampires, Vampires, Burial, and Death: Folklore and Reality (1988). At least, I hope it's a new edition. The item's description only alludes to a "New Introduction".

Be sure to tune in Tuesday for Suburban Vampire guest blog!

Blood Ties TV Series Review Episodes 1-8

Since I don’t have cable we finally broke down and got Netflix – which I am kind of excited about that fact that you can stream videos and TV shows from your computer as part of the package. But this isn’t a Netflix promotion; I only mention it because I received the first two disks of Blood Ties in the mail yesterday.

As mentioned before, I have read the Tanya Huff Blood series and enjoyed the books. I was glad to hear that the first season of Blood Ties had come to DVD on the second of this month. We watched both discs last night (8 episodes) and I would say it was pretty good.

My 21 year old brother, husband, and myself stayed up past our bedtimes last night to finish the discs that we had (thank goodness we didn’t have the 3rd of 4th disc or we would be quite tired this morning). We all enjoyed the episodes and didn’t want to stop the series to go to bed.

The first two episodes, appropriately titled “Blood Ties Part 1” and “Blood Ties Part 2” follow the first book – also named Blood Ties pretty accurately; there are some details a bit different (like how Henry is a graphic novel author and not a romance author as in the book) but overall it was pretty exact. I think that because the show debuted on Lifetime it toned down the book sex because there was really no sex in the TV series (unlike the book, where it is pretty modest, but still present), which can be a breath of fresh air to the overdone and sexed up HBO vampire show.

Unfortunately, only episode 1 and 2 were from the book. All the other episodes are non-book inspired – but entertaining none the less. I did have Henry pictured a bit different in my mind and all of us agreed that Celluci is too annoying, but we thought the series was overall pretty good and pretty funny too.

True Blood - Season 2 Episode 1 - No Longer Following the Sookie Books

OK, so after watching the second season premier of True Blood, it might be much easier to list the things that were similar in book 2 that appeared in the TV show versus what WASN’T the same. Pretty much everything in the episode had nothing to do with book two; which was extremely disappointing – especially the whole Lafayette debacle. How the heck are they going to work that one out?

I am becoming more and more disappointed in the show. I really need to work on separating in my mind the book and the TV show because they are so different, especially leading into season 2.

Beware of spoilers if you haven’t read Living Dead in Dallas but here are some differences between book and show:

· Lafayette is dead in Andy’s car – not the phony exorcist that never even existed to begin with.
· Mary Ann does not exist in the capacity she does on the show – she makes a couple brief appearances but not in the form of “Mary Ann” and she certainly does not have some rich demented half-way house – nor does Tara even meet her – except at the end LDID.
· Because Bill never killed Long Shadow to begin with (ERIC DID), he certainly did not have to make a young and annoying vampire – who also doesn’t exist… at all.
· Sookie’s uncle died “falling down the stairs” I’m pretty sure she found out about this in book one though, and both her and her brother received and inheritance.
· Jason never comes close to joining Fellowship of the sun.
· Sam had a happy childhood and was never abandoned or resorted to stealing and "Mary Ann" certainly didn’t take his virginity.
· Because Lafayette dies in the beginning on book 2 he is never tortured by Eric
· Eric does not need to highlight his hair

I will be very upset if Eric doesn’t attend an orgy with Sookie and if he doesn’t take care of her when she gets hurt in Texas. At least episode was more entertaining than last season.

Any one else have any thoughts/complaints?

And don' forget to enter to win Tanya Huff's Blood Ties!

Blood Ties Book Giveaway

I am a fan of Tanya Huff's Blood series - I read them towards the beginning of my Books with a Bite Book List. The books are about Vickie Nelson, once cop, now private detective who ends up solving paranormal crimes with the help of a steamy vampire.

Blood Ties also was turned into a TV show on lifetime and now with a renewed interest in all things vampire, and after many pleas, wishes, and requests from fans, Blood Ties was released on DVD June 2nd – which I am very excited about. I can’t wait to watch them – I’ve been waiting!

To view the official Blood Ties Site to read about the plot, characters, and cast and some other fun stuff, click here.

I am also jumping on the bandwagon and I have a few copies of Blood Ties the first book of the Blood Series to giveaway– comment or email me the name of your favorite character is any vampire genre – books, movies, TV. Winners will be randomly selected on June 30th.

Bear with me while I sort through issues with my new (and not improved) firewall.
