Special Guest: Roxanne Rhoads

Today's special guest is Roxanne Rhoads of Fang-tastic Books - and she even comes with a special treat!

Thanks Roxanne!

The Appeal of Darkness

By Roxanne Rhoads

Why are we drawn to the paranormal? Perhaps because it is the Other, it is the great unknown. The lure of the darkness that resides inside us all.

Are Others real? Are there really paranormal creatures that exist?

Who knows, but some of us sure like to believe.

Maybe we just need an escape from the everyday existence that has become so…ordinary. In today’s world people want to stand out and be noticed or at least experience something that is different. Perhaps that’s why so many of us turn to the world of the supernatural for an escape from the everyday.

Wouldn’t it be great to have super powers? Or to be immortal? Super strong? Have mind control? Or just be super seductive and a fabulous lover (we can all dream right)?

Of all supernatural creatures, vampires seem to be the most seductive. People are drawn to the vampire more than any other creature of myth and fantasy. Vampires grace the pages of books and appear on the movie and television screen over and over again, each new vampire a source of amusement and desire to us. But why? What is the everlasting attraction of the vampire?

Before the 19th century vampires were just mindless monsters, myths and legends that were horrible and frightening, not sexy, not desirable. Literature changed all that.

Consider this description from the introduction of Blood Read: The Vampire as Metaphor in Contemporary Culture written by Joan Gordon and Veronica Hollinger.

[The vampire is] “an ambiguously coded figure, a source of erotic anxiety and corrupt desire, the literary vampire is one of the most powerful archetypes bequeathed to us from the imagination of the nineteenth century.”

Vampires were turned into seductive and inherently sexy creatures that we just haven’t been able to get enough of. The unknown allure is there, evil has become sexy, darkness is beautiful. Once the monsters of myth and legend were shunned for their differences but today we embrace them because they are different, because they are Other.

Our modern society is full of disquiet, pain, suffering, depression, things that spiral out of control-real monsters and horrors face us every day on the news.

In entertainment we want monsters that we can control, monsters…Others that are appealing in their difference and offer us an escape. The vampire offers us all that and more.

I love many creatures of the Other world but the vampire is my first love and will always hold the top spot in my monster loving heart.

In my fiction, the characters are more often than not Others, with a vampire playing either the hero or the heroine of the story.

In my latest release, Eternal Desire, you’ll find a seductive vampire who chooses to hide in the shadows and stay on the sidelines of his human’s life. But while he’s biding his time she’s falling for someone else. Set in New Orleans during Halloween,Eternal Desire is an erotic paranormal story about LizBeth, a paranormal researcher, and her elusive vampire, Quillon, who seems content to hide in the shadows of her dreams but never comes to her in the flesh.

Want to know more about me and my fascination with Others? Drop by Fang-tastic Books to learn about the books I love and what I write.

Eternal Desire is Roxanne's new book!

Liz Beth, a paranormal researcher, is haunted by the seductive vampire, Quillon, who may or may not be real. She arrives in New Orleans the week of Halloween to search for the elusive vampire of her dreams and instead encounters a handsome stranger, Christien, with whom she begins a passionate affair with.

Soon she is torn between her dream lover and a flesh and blood man, both of whom are a mystery to her. The closer it gets to Halloween the wilder things become. LizBeth gets closer to the truth about Quillon while Christien has her under his own spell.

Will all be revealed at the Vampyre Ball or will the masks stay in place?

In New Orleans at Halloween anything is possible.

Here's a part of an amazing review by Kiki Howell:

After reading Eternal Desire, I would have to call Roxanne Rhoads a master of words. Each sentence flowed into another with a nice blend of old elegance and contemporary style which I think is important in this type of paranormal writing to best blend the modern day setting with the ghosts and vampires of another time. I have to give you an example from the beginning of the story, “a shadowy figure in my dreams, whispering of longings and ancient secrets. I never saw his face, but his voice lingered in my soul. He was an invisible guardian, calling to me…”

In the Presence of Saint Modwenna

Today's guest blogger book excerpt is from Andrew M. Boylan at Taliesin Meets the Vampires. Not only is he an author, and has a great movie and book review site, but I also love his rules of the game (devised from a list of research material). To read more from Andrew Boylan, head over to his sister site: Taliesin Writes the Vampires.

The following is an extract from Concilium Sanguinarius, actually chapter twenty, and has also been published as a stand alone in the zine Ethereal Tales.

Thanks Andrew - readers enjoy!

West Yorkshire, England – 1347

The campfire had just, grudgingly, flickered into life; the damp sticks producing as much smoke as they did light. The woman, a nun, knelt on the floor warming her hands whilst the two guards stood nearby grumbling to each other.

“Dame Startin,” the taller of the two guards addressed the woman, “begging yer pardon, but I’d ask you to reconsider. This forest ain’t safe.”

The woman shook her head and, silently, asked God for strength before replying. “Master Warder, I have left the title of Dame behind. I am the Prioress of Kirklees now.”

“As you say ma’m, but I’d still ask you to reconsider.” There seemed to be a small edge of panic or anxiety in the grizzled man’s voice.

“Master Warder, for better or for worse I fear that we are stuck in the forest until day breaks. I will not risk the horses by stumbling blind through the undergrowth.”

“But the inn is only two hours ride and ‘tis a lot safer than this ‘ere forest.” He insisted.

“The inn may as well be a hundred leagues distant if one of our mounts breaks a leg, and we have no need to fear the forest. The outlaws in Sherwood are centred around Nottingham and we are in Yorkshire. I doubt they will travel all this way to rob a penniless nun. Now will they?”

“Ma’m, the notorious brigands are to be found round Nottingham way, I grant you, but the forest is still thick with thieves, none-the-less.”

For a moment her voice carried the edge of her previous station in life. “Sir, I will broke no more discussion on the matter, we make camp here.” Her voice softened slightly before she added, “How long until we reach the priory if we ride at daybreak?”

Jack Warder groaned inaudibly, if she wanted to make good time to the priory they would not be stopping at the inn to break fast. “God willin’, we’ll be there by sunset tomorrow ma’m.”

Startin’s voice dropped into a mumble as she turned her attention back to the fire, “Good… good…” The discussion was over.

The guards moved out of earshot to confer.

“What do you make of it James?”

“It’s a rum ‘un, I’ll give you that,” replied the second guard, “But I can un’erstand it. A trip will lame a horse an’ that’ll slow us down on the morrow.”

“Not as much as ‘avin’ our throats cut.” Warder ran a dirt-encrusted finger menacingly across his throat to illustrate his point.

“Aye, you ‘ave a good point Jack lad, we’ll just ‘ave to keep a good watch.” James shrugged and then added, “As it is I ‘ave to make water, you make sure her ladyship don’t stray from the fire now.”

Neither guard noticed the shadow slipping through the trees, outside the light from the campfire.

James Goldborough watched his companion return to the campfire and then headed into the trees; he wanted to make sure he was out of sight of the camp. It wouldn’t do him any good to allow a lady of God to see him making water.

His friend’s concerns were well founded; the forest had become notorious in recent years. That said the Prioress was also right, most of the trouble was out round Nottingham. Thieves were not a localised problem though and caution was always needed. That was why Lord Grafton had insisted an armed guard escort the Prioress to her new position. Warder had been irritable through the entire journey, however, probably down to the fact that they’d had to take horses; he’d never been much of a horseman. If the truth was told neither of them were comfortable around the Prioress. She was a devout woman, of that there could be little doubt, but that also meant that when they stopped for the night, on the nights when they had stopped at inns, there had been no chance to play dice or get drunk or whore. Plenty of time for that on the way home though, James grinned to himself.

Once out of sight of the camp James lifted his padded aketon and dropped his hose. A relieved sigh escaped his mouth as the hot stream of urine splashed against the side of the oak.

He never saw the shadow creeping behind him, never knew it was there until two icy cold hands gripped his head. He managed a startled grunt before the hands twisted, snapping his neck and killing him instantly.

His body dropped softly to the floor, his own urine running back from the tree and pooling around his corpse, and the shadow slipped back into the night.

Jack Warder took off his kettle hat, placing it gently onto the floor so as not to disturb the Prioress, and then removed the padded coif that sat beneath it and scratched. The damned coif made his head itch. Probably full of lice, he thought, as he scratched furiously at his sweat-dampened hair.

The sooner they were out of the damn forest the better. He believed all he had said about outlaws true enough, but then there was the other thing. He hadn’t had the courage to mention it to the Prioress, she’d never believe him, nor to James for that matter, the younger guard would have laughed until he pissed himself. Jack knew better though, Jack knew the forest was haunted.

His cousin Ben had told him the stories. The tale of the White Lady who haunted the forest. Some said it was the ghost of a Saxon lady restless after the Normans had taken her husband’s lands and then raped and killed her a few hundred years back.

Others said it was the presence of Saint Modwenna punishing those who broke the Commandments, though Jack couldn’t say why a Saint would attack those out in the forest. Worse thing was, he thought to himself, if it was the Blessed Saint then he was doomed if she found him. He had never been one for observing the Commandments.

Thing was, this White Lady was real enough, Ben had sworn it, and he’d never known the boy lie.

He scratched at his head again. The prioress seemed lost in her own thoughts and the horses, tied to a nearby tree, were quiet enough. James was taking his own sweet time though.

“Jack come ‘ere.”

He looked at the Prioress but she hadn’t reacted. The other guard’s voice had seemed odd, no more than a whisper. He might have seen something in the trees, something that had forced him to lower his voice. Maybe he had caught sight of brigands in the woods. Warder picked up his rough handled knife and moved to the edge of the clearing.

“James, James Goldborough, where are you?” He hissed.

The shadow touched his mind again and whispered “Over ‘ere Jack.” To Warder it sounded like Goldborough, though he wasn’t to know that his friend lay dead amongst the trees.

Warder moved further into the forest, away from the light of the fire, fear gripping his stomach. Damn the boy, he thought, what sort of game was he playing? Tree branches caught at his clothing, tugging at him in the dark, and scraped across his rough face. A sound made him whirl around, cracking his head on a low branch. He swore lightly, it had been an owl. As he rubbed his sore skull he realised that he had left his helm at the camp.

“Goldborough?” His voice was stretched, barely audible above the frantic pounding of his own heart.

James Goldborough did not reply.

“What the hell…” He thought he saw a shadow flitting through the undergrowth, but then rationalised that it was just the thin moonlight moving through the swaying branches. Even so his hand gripped the knife tightly, his knuckles white.

“To Hell with you Goldborough, enough of your games.” He said almost too loudly. He turned to move back to the camp.

He glimpsed her for just a second before the talon like fingernails ripped his throat. Enough time for him to recognise the White Lady. Enough time for his feverish mind to realise that he had been right to believe Ben and for a stream of urine to soil his dirty grey hose.

He fell to the floor, clutching the gapping hole in his throat, blood spraying through his fingers and spilling onto the forest floor. Unable to make a sound.
Unable to warn his charge.

The shadow flitted towards the clearing.

At the edge of the clearing, outside the light flickering from the fire, she watched the Prioress. The older woman was praying, her fingers flickering over a set of ornate rosary beads.

The shadow circled around until it stood behind the Prioress, head still bent in prayer. She edged closer and closer until she stood directly above the nun. Her white fingers, stained red with Jack Warder’s blood, reached out slowly and then gently pulled back the wimple.

The Prioress’ eyes shot open; she twisted around to see a young girl, beautiful and yet so pale of skin. She was about to ask the girl her name when the girl’s mouth opened and she saw the fangs and the luminescent flash of red in the girl’s eyes.

She lifted the rosary, holding the tiny crucifix up to the devil, for devil it surely must have been. “God preserve me… I beg of you Lord, preserve your servant.”

The vampire laughed, the woman was absolutely sincere in her prayer, sincere in both her will to live and her belief that her God would protect her. She took the rosary from the Prioress’ hand and looked at it for a moment before throwing it to one side. “Which God would that be?” She asked the trembling nun, and then she struck, her fangs burying deep into the older woman’s neck.

For a moment the Prioress felt the touch of paradise. She sank into the vampire’s embrace willingly, offering up her life.

The horses panicked, neighing and whinnying franticly, pulling back at the ropes that tied them and kicking back into the night, kicking naught but air, or each other. One of them managed to break its head collar and ran into the night, neighing furiously.

The vampire ignored the horses and fed.

Two nights later the new Prioress of Kirklees arrived at her post, her habit stained from her travels, her ornate rosary clutched in her hands.

Her appearance took the nuns aback at first. She was so much younger than they had expected and she was also a day late. They asked her where her escorts had gone, concerned that she should have travelled the roads alone. Her escorts had been forced to return to their Lord with all haste after ensuring she was safe, she explained. Surely the nuns had seen the horsemen galloping off down the road. One remembered that she had and then another. Foolish men, thought one, always rushing here and there. They should have come in for the night, rested and returned to their Lord on the morrow.

Within hours Danaan had settled into the Prioress’ room, leaving explicit orders that she was extremely fatigued and was not to be disturbed the following day.

White Witch Black Curse Review

White Witch Black Curse is book 7 in The Hollows series by Kim Harrison. While these books feature a witch as the main character, her best friend and work partner is a vampire, and so was her lover - so I think this book series can still fit in with this blog. Yes it was released at the end of February this year, but with my absence, I am still playing catch up.

Rachel Morgan; witch, paranormal crime solver, and friend of a living vampire and pixie family is going through a lot of personal trials in this book. She is trying to remember the death of a loved one in hopes of finding the murderer responsible, the witch community is turning away from her because of her demon marks, and she is still struggling with her relationship with her vampire friend Ivy. To make matters worse, a friend has been almost killed and she must take down the creature who hurt him - which is a lot harder than some people realize. Did I mention the demon marks? Plus she has "demon school" once a week with a nasty demon she had to make a bargain with to save some one's life. Things just get more complicated for Rachel; and emotional.

Not to spoil it for anyone, but after a certain death in the books I did not want to continue on. Semi-reluctantly picking up this book, I soon was engrossed with Harrison's plot and writing and could not put it down. For one, the books are hilarious. I laughed out loud several times, earning weird looks from my husband. Secondly, Harrison really knows how to produce emotion in her readers. I laughed, cried, was angry, sad, frustrated, and annoyed. Several times I wanted to have a frustrating crying tantrum for Rachel. So many things go wrong I felt so bad for her!

On a happy note (the only happy note?) a ghost from her past shows up - which leaves her hopeful for the future.

I think The Hollows Series are a great Halloween read - the books incorporate pagan elements, as well as vampires, pixies, witches, weres, and other creatures that go bump in the night (and many that go bump in the day). I have renewed interest in the series and I look forward to the next book.

Black Magic Sanction - Book 8, will be released in February 2010.

Skin Trade - A Review

As many of you have read in my last post, I broke down and checked out Skin Trade from the library (I gave my self some props slack since I didn’t actually spend money on it; except the library fees I owed.).

Any of you who have even remotely heard of the Laurell K Hamilton book debacle have probably heard about how the last 10 or so Anita Blake books have been smut – filled with Mary Sue-ism, bad porn, orgies, and bestiality. After reading the last book, Blood Noir I was a little bit surprised that there were only about 3 sex scenes in the book – was this an improvement? Would the next Anita Blake books get better? I wanted to hope so… at least I would feel less guilty about reading them.

So that brings us to Skin Trade Book 17 of the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Books. Anita Blake must run to Vegas to try and kill the ancient vamp serial killer that got away from her a while back. He even personally requests her and sends her a lovely gift. While in Vegas she meets up with some old Obsidian Butteryfly friends, which includes Edward.

Will Anita Blake kill Vittorino before he kills her?

Will she have control of the stupid annoying Ardeur?

What will happen with her connections to the Lions?

Will she pick up some more bedmates?

And so goes the anticipation and curiosity (FYI - that was sarcasm in the last few sentences). Like I mentioned before; it’s like an Obsidian Butterfly reunion. All the OB marshals are there, its hot; there is an ancient power against them, etc. etc.

I’m not saying it was the best book I have ever read, but I was a bit impressed that LKH toned it down! Yes, you read it, it is a bit toned-down! Yes. Anita is “amazing” and “perfect” and “all-powerful” and all that, but she meets psychics who rival her ability too – never female, but it’s a start.

Yes, there is lion drama. Yes, Marmee Noir makes an appearance, Yes, there is sex. BUT – there is no in-detail orgies or bestiality, no real details of Nathaniel, Asher, Richard, or Micah, and only brief conversations with Jean Claude (how dare he be mad with her) and one small conversation with Jason. So this book is almost a vacation from the recent usual Anita Blake crap.

It will be interesting to see where the next book goes because it seems like certain things were wrapped up a little too nicely in the end. Skin Trade definitely could have been a lot worse.

And so my unfortunate infatuation with the Anita Blake world continues.

Mr. Darcy, Vampyre - Review

Ah... Mr. Darcy, forever immortalized by the sexy Colin Firth (and I would argue that Mr. Darcy made him sexy). So here we are, Amanda Grange has combined the sexy Mr. Darcy AND vampyres (which can obviously be sexy too) so naturally, I was instantly curious to see what Mr. Darcy, Vampyre was all about. I was a little cautious though. I am a big fan of Pride and Prejudice and I figured this could either be really good, or really bad.

The book begins on Elizabeth's wedding day; her and her sister are to have a double wedding with their grooms Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy. Shortly after saying their vows Lizzy is feeling odd about Mr. Darcy - he is acting strangely, he resists touching her, and keeps secrets to himself. To top it all off they end up changing their wedding tour plans to gallivant around Europe meeting disapproving members of Darcy's "family." Elizabeth sees the adoring and loving looks Darcy has for her.... but she isn't sure it is enough for them to remained married.

I have to admit, when I first started reading the book I was frustrated that Darcy seemed off-putting and stubborn. I wanted the charming Darcy! But as the book progressed I couldn't put it down - which is bad when you are reading during your lunch break. Grange adds some interesting and unique elements both to the vampyre story and to the adventures of Darcy and Elizabeth. I thought some of the adventures they experienced were a nice touch. And I enjoyed the ending. Some of the things I thought wrapped up a bit to quick or didn't go into enough detail, but overall I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to a vampire fan... and if you have ever imagined Darcy as a creature of the dark.... or if you like to. The beginning of Mr. Darcy, Vampyre was frustrating to get through because of his behavior, but after you tell yourself it will be alright, it starts to be pretty good and I fell in love with Darcy all over again.

Kiss of Midnight Review

I stood in my living room Monday night surveying my apartment and doing a mental checklist: moped floors - check, picked up living room - check, cleaned bathroom -check, made jewelry - check, and the list goes on. My husband has been out having fun doing homework and projects, so after spending several hours playing any game I could find on Facebook (except vampire wars oddly enough) I had nothing to do (I don't have TV Channels).... so I picked up a book! About time!

So here I am, feeling pretty productive, but ultimately bored and in need of some adventure (and maybe some passion?) I found this little gem a friend had lent me - Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian (book 1 of 8 so far in the Midnight Breed Series - Any books under the name "breed" have to be awesome don't you think?). And I knew full well what I was getting myself into.

KoM is like any other vampire romance, and not to spoil it too much, but here is your standard outline for these things:

Meet human female - female has some issues and no guardians (can't have any attachments)
Meet hunky vampire male - Mentioned female probably doesn't know he is a vampire yet - only that she feels a strange draw to him and can't get him out of her mind.
Male vampire has issues - he is brooding and lonely and swears he will never fall in love
DANGER!
Female has some secret power or ability, or knack for something that makes her unique
Male Vampire finds female sexy but needs to protect her
SEX!
Arguments need to occur - you know, because they are "getting to know each other"
DANGER!
Male vampire falls madly in love with her - for they were destined to be together
They live happily ever after

These events may happen in different orders - but the vampire needs to have a sexy weird name, in this case, Lucan - yes ladies - Lucan. I'm up for naming my first born son after him - what say you? And to highlight the "destiny factor" I even took the time to highlight a golden quote:

And in the back of his mind, an ancient conscience whispered that whoever she was, she already belonged to him

That was page 26 by the way - before their official meeting.

Nonetheless.... I couldn't put the book down. I knew it was ridiculous, I knew it was lame... but heck, I'm pretty lame myself and I am female after all. I thought Lucan was pretty hot and steamy, sometimes an ass (but hey, he's a "bad boy" Right?). I kind of skimmed over all the battle jargon and fighting events and secret squirrel stuff, but I was entertained, my mind easily used it as fantasy material, and I may even read the next 7 8 9 10 (11? 12? ... probably not).

To be honest, its pretty similar to the Dark Ones Series. Each book features a different human chick and a different "vampire" but all of them are interlocked and all the females were destined to be mates for the fanged hunks.

So there you have it - Kiss of Midnight is not that unique (old vampires covered in pretty "markings" is kind of cool though) but it held my attention and was a guilty read.

Blood Ties TV Series Review Episodes 1-8

Since I don’t have cable we finally broke down and got Netflix – which I am kind of excited about that fact that you can stream videos and TV shows from your computer as part of the package. But this isn’t a Netflix promotion; I only mention it because I received the first two disks of Blood Ties in the mail yesterday.

As mentioned before, I have read the Tanya Huff Blood series and enjoyed the books. I was glad to hear that the first season of Blood Ties had come to DVD on the second of this month. We watched both discs last night (8 episodes) and I would say it was pretty good.

My 21 year old brother, husband, and myself stayed up past our bedtimes last night to finish the discs that we had (thank goodness we didn’t have the 3rd of 4th disc or we would be quite tired this morning). We all enjoyed the episodes and didn’t want to stop the series to go to bed.

The first two episodes, appropriately titled “Blood Ties Part 1” and “Blood Ties Part 2” follow the first book – also named Blood Ties pretty accurately; there are some details a bit different (like how Henry is a graphic novel author and not a romance author as in the book) but overall it was pretty exact. I think that because the show debuted on Lifetime it toned down the book sex because there was really no sex in the TV series (unlike the book, where it is pretty modest, but still present), which can be a breath of fresh air to the overdone and sexed up HBO vampire show.

Unfortunately, only episode 1 and 2 were from the book. All the other episodes are non-book inspired – but entertaining none the less. I did have Henry pictured a bit different in my mind and all of us agreed that Celluci is too annoying, but we thought the series was overall pretty good and pretty funny too.

Bloody Good Book Review

I had the pleasure of reading Bloody Good by Georgia Evans this week. While I was initially put off by the thought of blood-sucking Nazis (literally - vampire Nazis) I quickly got over it and found myself engrossed.

From the back cover:
While the sounds of battle echo through the sky, a lady doctor has more than enough trouble to keep her busy even in a sleepy hamlet outside London. But the threat is nearer home than Alice knows.

German agents have infiltrated her beloved countryside - Nazis who can fly, read minds, and live forever. They're not just fascists. They're vampires. Alice has no time for fantasy, but when the corpses start appearing sucked dry, she'll have to accept help where she can get it. If that includes a lowly Conscientious Objector who says he's no coward though he refuses to fight, and her very own grandmother, a sane, sensible woman who insists that she's a Devonshire Pixie, so be it.

Indeed, whatever it takes to defend home and country from an evil both ancient and terrifyingly modern...

I found this paranormal fiction to be fun and entertaining; my husband couldn't believe that I wanted to read a book about vampire Nazis. Do not let this turn you away from reading BG. There is a war going on and both sides are willing to use whatever means necessary to win - even if that means utilizing "Other" creatures to their advantage.

I thought that Alice was a very likeable character - she is a smart, science-based woman who lives with her grandmother. She is sweet, caring, and quite capable of taking care of herself; which I prefer to the "can't eat, breath, or live without you" type of gal. The story setting was quite different then what I am use to as well. I can't remember the last book I read that wasn't set in present-day time.

Even though the relationship between Alice and the infamous CO isn't very unique, I found it fun and sweet and sometimes a little steamy... I giggled like a little school girl on several occasions.
I did not like the ending however. Yes, this is book one of three but it ended so abruptly it kind of ticked me off. That's how they get you waiting for the next book I suppose.

Bloody Good comes out June 2nd, followed by Bloody Awful - July 7th, and Bloody Right -August 4th.
You can view more information on the author and the books, as well as characters and other fun here.

The Vampire's Betrayal

The Vampire’s Betrayal – Book 4 of Raven Hart’s Savannah vampire series is another emotional rollercoaster that has your wondering what will happen next.

As mentioned before, Hart sure has a way to put you on pins and needles while reading her books. Each book never provides closure, which makes you want to hurry and pick up the next one in the series. These aren’t your sappy happy ending stories either. Characters experience real pain and loss and in turn, the reader experiences a whole assortment of emotions. I think another apt title for book for would be “When it Rains it Pours.” The friendly vampires can’t seem to catch a break. First William finds heartache, then Jack. I almost want a happy ending to appear!
If you haven't read this series I would definitely recommend!

The Vampire's Kiss Review

I’ve now finished book 3 of the Savannah vampire series – The Vampire’s Kiss. While I found this book to be not as emotionally jarring as the previous two, Hart sure does have a way of creating suspense and cliff hangers. I was constantly wondering what in the world would happen next.

You can read the summary here.

I won’t give away any spoilers either (unless you ask me personally, I have no qualms).

I have to come clean though – I think this is the only book that I deliberately flipped to the back of the book to read what happens at the end (except maybe some of the Twilight books – for different reasons). It was getting close to bedtime (I need my beauty rest) and I was coming to the climax of the whole thing and I just couldn’t take it. I had to know if everything was going to turn out right.

Now I’m off to read the 4th book! Soon I will have to go and buy the fifth book which came out last week!

Review: The Otherworldlies

I read The Otherworldlies by Jennifer Anne Kogler yesterday. It was recommended to me by Hylian Vampire.

Book description (from HarperCollins)

Fern communicates with her dog, blisters from just moments in the sun, and has correctly predicted the daily weather for more than two years. Even so, she's always seemed to be a normal twelve-year-old girl . . . until one day when Fern closes her eyes in class and opens them seconds later on a sandy beach miles away from school. When Fern disappears again, this time to a place far more dangerous, she begins to realize exactly how different she is.

With the help of her twin brother, Sam, Fern struggles to gain control of her supernatural powers. The arrival of a sinister vampire in town—who seems to have an alarming interest in Fern's powers—causes Fern to question her true identity. Who is she? More importantly, who can she count on? Soon Fern finds herself in the middle of a centuries-old battle—one that could destroy Fern and endanger everyone she loves.

If I had adolescent girls I would definitely be much more comfortable having them read this books than that other popular teen girl vampire book.
Kogler does a great job creating a world that not only children would love to explore, but adults as well. Some of the scenes seem to be just what I fantasized about when I was younger (exploring cool new places with your brother, learning new secrets, etc.).
This was a fun easy read about a young girl who feels like an outcast who must learn and except herself. The vampires have much of the same characterisitcs as your classic vamp, but there is a lot more depth in them than most books. Again, we see vampires being related to Zeus and the Gods.
I would definitely read a follow-up to this book if it came out!

Review: The Vampire's Secret

Last night I finished The Vampire's Secret, book 2 of the Savannah Vampire Chronicles by Raven Hart. If you are looking for something sweet and sappy, this is not it.

If you haven't read the first book The Vampire's Secret, this may contain some spoilers. William has just defeated his evil sire Reedrek, leaving him deep underground to torture him. He now has three "children" - Jack, the adventureous, sensitive, ladies man in love with a cop who he can't have, Werm, a wannabe badass, and Eleanor, a "madam" who is the only woman he has ever gotten close to since the death of his mortal wife.

These Savanah vampires are calling on their old friends from across the country to prepare for a war between the good vampires and the bad vampires, but William gets a agonizing suprise when one of the Dark Lords shows up with members of his clan.

Will William turn his back on his friends? Or william throw it all away to obtain what he desires most?

First, let me say that I think the titles of these books are very misleading. The titles and the cover art makes you think that the books are your regular romance with a vampire male - these stories are more than that, especially this book. I also think the summary's are a bit misleading as well.

There is so much emotion and drama you don't know what to do or how to feel. I felt angry, sad, frustrated, hopeful, and betrayed. A lot of issues from the past surface and you aren't sure who are the good guys anymore. Not much is resolved at the end either.

It was hard for me to get through this book because of all the drama. Sometimes you don't want a book making you feel frustrated, but none the less, I am looking forward to digging into the next book to see what happens.

More Than Fiction

Do vampires really exist? Is there proof?

In case you haven't come across them yet, there are a some awesome blogs dedicated to the scientific and historical facts, myths, and rumors. Check them out! There is some interesting stuff out there. These are some of my favorite:

Diary of an Amateur Vampirologist:

and

Magia Posthuma:
"On several occasions, particularly on the periphery of the Habsburg Empire during the 17th and 18th centuries, dead people were suspected of being revenants or vampires, and consequently dug up and destroyed. Contemporary authors named this phenomenon Magia Posthuma. This blog is dedicated to understanding what happened and why"

One More Bite

I finally was able to get Jennifer Rardin's One More Bite (book 5 of the Jaz Parks Series) which came out January 5th. My guy picked it up for me on Tuesday. For some reason Borders said they wouldn't get it until next week though... but Barnes and Noble had it!

I've been looking forward to reading this book and had plans to buy it the day it came out, but it didn't work that way. I was even more excited to read it after Rardin kindly agreed to do an interview!

In OMB Jaz, Vayl, Cole, and an Uninvited guest travel to a remote Bed and Breakfast to kill the enemy of their enemies ally (say that 10x fast!). Jaz must focus on the mission at hand even though there is lots of things to keep her distracted and run her off track (who wants to try and save your enemy?).

The team acts under the guise of attending GhostCon to make more contacts for the business of “laying ghosts to rest” and they get a lot more than they bargained for! Ghosts, witches, action, danger, and maybe a little bit of romance make this book hard to put down and an enjoyable read!

I think this is my favorite Jaz Parks book yet. Jaz seems to be more comfortable in her own skin and able to deal better with all the bad stuff in her past. She is recognizing that she can’t run from others anymore and begins to open herself up again to her friends. She is still funny and stubborn though!

My favorite quote from Jaz is when she is thinking about how hot her vampire boss is even with the gold earring/spy equipment:

Maybe it was his Rom ancestry or Bergman’s sunscreen, but I thought he looked freaking hot. Kinda like Jake Gyllenhaal with fangs and a shudder-to-think-of-it past.(page 76).

I like the Jaz Parks books for several reasons:
Hot vampire character
Strong and independent female lead character
Dangerous spy action
Great characters
Jaz is hilarious
Storyline is well developed
Book is well written
It’s not all about shallow women and hunky vampires having copious amounts of sex because they can’t live without each other.
You want to read more!

This book is fun to read, there is a bit of romance, but it is not a romance! The characters are strong and independent and they don’t jump into bed with each other (even though you sometimes wish they did!). Those that are romantically linked develop relationships before they start pawing each other… which is a nice change. Now, in book 5, relationships have had a chance to be established and grow, and quoting Rardin, “there is a lot of heavy breathing going during One More Bite—and not all of it takes place after foot chases!” I won’t say any more - go read it for yourself!
