Life and Stuff

This weekend I am going to work at a retreat my job is putting on… I should have fun but I am not really looking forward to being gone all weekend. At least I get Wednesday thru Friday off for my reschedule days. I’ve been stressing over the whole “what do I want to be when I grow up” question. I’m trying to figure out what grad schools I would like to go to, what programs I want to enter, and how I can do it all by staying local, working, and being married. Mostly I am concerned about what program to enter into.

Around here, at CSU or UC the options I would be interested in would be Health Psychology, Cognitive Psych, Quantitative Psych, or Forensic/behavioral psych or a masters in marriage and family counseling. I don’t think I want to do therapy anymore, research would be cool, but I don’t want to teach. Forensic and behavioral Psych joint Doctorate would be pretty interesting. Who knows.

I am looking forward to going back to get my Master and/or Ph.D, but I’m not too thrilled about the cost, the years it will take, and the overall pain in the ass it can be. There are some really interesting jobs in Psych with a Ph.D, but they are mostly available in the big cities… not exactly where I am at, and I don’t really want to teach or do therapy, but we’ll see. I’m just hoping I can find something I truly love to do and make at least a living wage on it. I don’t have to make fantastic money, but something to make a living and worth 8+ years of college would be great.

But enough about my personal life. I am still reading Obsidian Butterfly by Laurell K Hamilton. It is taking me forever; partly because I have been super busy, partly because it is a lot hard to get through than her other works. This was the first Anita Blake book I read and I am surprised I enjoyed it so much I wanted to read the rest of the books.

True Blood premiers in just a little over a week! My friends and I are planning on doing a little party (check out the recipes here and here). It’s been fun getting a few of my friends interested in the same books that I have been reading.

My good friend Cassie (also a vampire book lover) turned me on to Dance of the Vampires. I would love to see the musical, but that probably won’t happen. I am waiting to get the movie in the mail. Until then, here is an interesting clip.

Two and a Half Weeks Until True Blood Premier

True Blood premiers on HBO September 7th at 9pm. I have been a big fan of Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Series and look forward to the show. I've also managed to get a few friends hooked on the Sookie Stackhouse books as well!

I know that the books will be 10x better than the show - I wasn't extremely impressed with the pilot episode - which you can read about here and here. They've made some changes and I would support Charlaine Harris and just watch it for fun.

It’s Friday! The week has gone by pretty quickly… I’ve been pretty busy with work, wedding stuff, and I went to the Warped Tour! I will post pictures soon. Since it’s Friday, I thought I would add something fun.

I love Colin Firth and I love The Picture of Dorian Gray and Oscar Wilde. Coincidentally, Stewart Townsend also played Dorian Gray in The League of Extraordinary Gentleman.

Some people say that Dorian Gray is a vampire: he sells his soul to become beautiful forever; never aging and never growing old. Read the book, it’s great. Oscar Wilde is quite brilliant and his quotes are always great.

I have lot of plans for the weekend, but I am hoping to have some new book reviews Monday!

Tru Blood and if Vampires Announced They Were Among Us

Since I have been slacking on reading, I thought I would expand on my last entry about the Trueblood series coming out. I saw the Tru Blood commercials on BloodCopy and I think they are great. Also, Trueblood is a family name of mine... so it was meant to be!

So a question that has been fluttering around the various sites linked to Trueblood is "If Vampires announced their existance to the world, how would you react and what would happen?"

I am sure you have the vampire loving group that will automatically jump for joy and think they will become fang bangers. TO be honest, if there was a vampire like Eric from the Sookie Sackhouse Series then I might consider joining that group too. But if you really think about it, even if vampires did exist, it probably would never work out for them to go public.

If you have the somewhat cliche vampire, they are dangerous. Even if they could live off of "tru blood" they would still possess super strength, "hypnotic abilities", and be above the law. People can be controlled... I doubt vampires could be. Sure some of them might be "good" and want to "mainstream," but those that do not desire to do so could cause a lot of harm.

You also have the religious fanatics who would be on a hunt to rid "the evil" from the world. Religious fanatics who actually have a good reason to be afraid would probably be unbearable. Any murder would be vampire suspect. The criminal justice system would have to be revamped (no pun intended), and scared people do stupid things sometimes. Mix in ignorance and fear and what do you get? A breeding ground for racism.

Taking away the fact that the government would have an incredibly hard time controlling and tracking vampires (how do you make a vampire pay taxes? Not commit crime?) there would be another type of hunt: researches would have a field day! I love research, I think we should be doing research, but where would the line be drawn when researching a vampire? It would be great to hear stories about the history of the world, and history as we know it might change, languages might be saved and recorder (that would be awesome), but what about medical testing? Would there be illegal medical testing on vampires? Probably. If I was the government I would probably try and get my hands on some type of formula to give my soldiers super strength, or find the cure for eternal youth. There is plenty of money to be used to have corrupt research done.

If I was a vampire, I doubt I would support a world wide "coming out" party. Maybe a gradual immersion.... (IE befriending humans for years before coming out the coffin) but I don't think it could work very well.

Note: I just noticed I put an annoyingly amount of quotations into this entry.

I Gotta Dance

I haven't been in reading mode the last week or two. I have been waiting to get books I requested at the library and I have been playing Guitar Hero. I haven't finished the 2 none-vampire books I mentioned in the last post.

This weekend a lot of my books finally came in. I was fairly busy, since Marc came up and we went out with friends, but I did manage to read one yesterday.

Nichole and I have been looking for a good place to go dancing. We really like Aqua Shi... but that is 2 hours away where my family is at. We tried out Roe this weekend. It was okay. It was nice inside, but the DJ wasn't very good, the dance floor was smaller, it was more expensive, and although it is in a nice part of town and there are a lot of rich people there; most of them weren't too "classy." Aqua Shi is nice too, but it doesn't have the majority of people dancing/looking like they are having sex.

We are going to have to find another club to go to. Nichole and I have taken a liking to going dancing and Marc is always mentioning the Dane Cook skit about dancing.
